Permit to Work System | Port of Broome

The Permit to Work System is a formal written system used to control single and simultaneous operations which are identified as being potentially hazardous so as to ensure the safety of not only those personnel doing the work, but also others who may be affected by the work.

  • Specifies the work to be done and the equipment to be used
  • Specifies the precautions to be taken when performing the task
  • Gives permission for work to start
  • Advises Broome Port Operators that work is being performed within their area of operation.
  • Provides a check to ensure that all safety considerations have been taken into account, including the validity of permits and certificates and compliance to the
  • POB policies and procedures and
  • On completion of work it provides a checking mechanism that all work has been completed to the Port Authority’s satisfaction.

General Work Permit
(White)
Required for any work to be performed that is not identified as routine maintenance work of low hazard potential, for example, high pressure water jetting, removal of handrails, gratings, fixed ladders and pressure testing (all situations).

Hot Work Permit
(Red)
Note: A HWP is not required for Hot Work in the Workshop Area unless the work is related to a storage tanker/vessel (confined space)

Confined Space
Entry Permit

(Yellow)

 

Required for entering a space that has inadequate ventilation, access or both, or which may contain flammable or injurious liquids, gases, vapours, dust or insufficient oxygen to sustain life, or falls under the categorisation in AS 2885.

Electrical Work Permit
(Orange)


Required for any work to be performed on electrical equipment. Note: A Work Permit is not required for general routine maintenance such light globe replacement, electrical tagging of equipment etc.

High Voltage Access Permit
(Orange)

 

Required for control of isolation, de-isolation and work on high voltage (greater than 10000 VAC or 1500 VDC) electrical conductors.
(*Only to be issued to approved electricians).

Excavation and Penetration Permit
(Dark Green)


Required for any work to be performed that will dig deeper than 150mm by hand or for any mechanical device.

Working at Height / Over the Side Permit
(Purple)

 

Required for any work to be performed where there is a risk of injury from falling.

Diving Permit
(Dark Blue)

 

Required for any work to be performed underwater.

Abrasive Blasting / Spray Painting Permit
(Light Blue)
Required for any work to be performed using abrasive blasting and spray painting.
Note: A ABPP is not required for Work in the Workshop Area unless the work is related to a storage tanker/vessel etc.

Mancage Permit
(Light Green)
Required for any work to be performed using a mancage weather that be via a Crane or Forklift.
Note: Mancage Permits can filled in signed off and completed by a POB Supervisors in charge of a shift
